Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques is a Grammy Award-winning Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist professionally known as Sean Paul. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica into a family of very talented athletic swimmers. Both his father and grandfather were on the Jamaican men’s national water polo team and his mother was a backstroke swimmer. He was raised in Upper Saint Andrew Parish and was geared towards continuing the family’s swimming tradition playing for the national water polo team from the age of thirteen to twenty-one. However, he gave up the sport in order to launch his musical career. He became a Deejay basing his style largely on the works of Super Cat and Don Yute. Don Yute later became his idol and mentor. In 1996, Sean Paul released his debut single “Baby Girl (Don’t Cry)” with producer Jeremy Harding which proved to be a significant success and led to further Jamaican hits by Sean Paul. In 1999, Sean Paul started to attract audiences in the United States when he was commissioned to collaborate with fellow dancehall hitmaker Mr. Vegas on a production for rapper DMX, entitled “Top Shotter”. Also that year, Paul scored a top ten hit on the Billboard Rap chart with “Hot Gal Today”, which quickly became his signature tune. Sean Paul fell out very publicly with Mr. Vegas over the packaging of Vegas’ remix of “Hot Gal Today”. In 1996 the duo appeared on Whodini’s album, Six, appearing on the track “Can’t Get Enough”, and assisting writing on two other tracks on the album. They had two hits in 1998 with the platinum single, “Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)”, which hit number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was featured on their only album, Make It Reign. The album featured collaborations with rappers Big Pun, Fat Joe, Sticky Fingaz, Kurupt and Cam’ron. But the duo had no further hits and amicably split up shortly after. The son of Peter Gunz, Cory Gunz is also a rapper. Lord Tariq has a solo album The Barcode that featured Peter and Cory Gunz. Lord Tariq also did a collaboration with Jay-Z and Shaquille O’Neal in 1996 on a song titled “No Love Lost” for O’Neal’s album, You Can’t Stop the Reign. A remix of this song later surfaced with the name “Analyze This” and O’Neal’s lyrics replaced with a new verse from Nas for the Analyze This soundtrack. Gunz also collaborated with O’Neal on “Strait Playin” (also featuring DJ Quik), “Best to Worst,” and “Can I Play?” from Shaq’s album “You Can’t Stop the Reign” and “The Way It’s Going Down” and “Make this a Night to Remember” on Shaq’s album “Respect.” Gunz also teamed up with O’Neal, along with rappers B-Real, Ice Cube, and KRS-1 on the tune “Men of Steel” from the movie …
