Released as the fourth single from the album on May 8, 1983, the song peaked at number five on the American Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, topped the American Hot Black Singles and Hot Dance Club Songs charts and reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” was re-recorded with R&B artist Akon for the 2008 reissue album Thriller 25 under the title “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ 2008″ and was released as a single, charting at number 48 on the Billboard Pop 100 in the United States. It also appears in Grand Theft Auto Vice City on Fever 105. The song ends with a chorus repeatedly singing “Mama-se, mama-sa, ma-ma-coo-sa”. The chant is a riff on one first used by Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango, who broke into the American market in 1973 with his classic “Soul Makossa”. “‘Soul Makossa’ was a big hit, in Africa, in Europe, and in America, where it came to be seen as one of the first disco records,” says Kelefa Sanneh of The New Yorker magazine. Sanneh adds that, “[Dibango] named his song after the makossa, a Cameroonian dance, but he stretched the word out, [and] played with it [so that it sounded like]: ‘Ma-mako, ma-ma-ssa, mako-makossa’.” Jackson’s version of the Dibango chant has since been sampled and incorporated into other songs

Michael Jackson – Bad (Live Bad Tour 1987)

Michael Jackson – Bad (Live Bad Tour 1987 Japan) “Bad” was a 1987 hit recording by American singer Michael Jackson. The song was the second of five Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit singles from the album Bad, and was his seventh number-one single overall. The song was originally intended as a duet with longtime rival Prince, which one can infer with the song’s lyrics. Quincy Jones, in an interview included in the special edition of Bad, said that Prince told Jackson and him that he had not wanted to participate because “it would be a hit without (him)”. In a 1996 interview with German TV, Prince also humorously said that the reason he didn’t want to participate was the first line “Your butt is mine”, and that he said to Jackson; “I ain’t saying that to you… and you sure ain’t saying that to me!” In his 1988 autobiography Moonwalk, Jackson wrote: “‘Bad’ is a song about the street. It’s about this kid from a bad neighborhood who gets to go away to a private school. He comes back to the old neighborhood when he’s on a break from school and the kids from the neighborhood start giving him trouble. He sings, ‘I’m bad, you’re bad, who’s bad, who’s the best?’ He’s saying when you’re strong and good, then you’re bad.” In 2006, the single, as well as the video, was re-released as part of the Visionary – The Video Singles package. ”Rock with You” was released on November 3, 1979, as the second single from Michael Jackson’s fifth solo LP and breakthrough album, Off the Wall. Written by Heatwave group member and songwriter Rod Temperton, the song helped Jackson score one of the first Billboard number-one singles in the 1980s, as well as one of the last big hits of the disco era. It reached number one on both the pop and R&B singles chart and became one of Jackson’s most-loved songs. A video for the song shows a smiling Jackson dancing in a sequined suit against a background laser. According to Billboard, the song was the fourth biggest single of 1980. It was re-released as a single on February 27, 2006, as part of the Visionary: The Video Singles box set. The song was later covered by singer Brandy in 1995 for Quincy Jones’ album, Q’s Jook Joint. It was also covered by Ashanti in 2003 as a remix to her single “Rock With Me (Aww Baby)” and performed at the BET Awards. In 2008, Michael’s sister, Janet, released “Rock with U” (a house / club number), from her Discipline album. Although similar in name, the songs are completely different in lyrics and music. Chris Brown performed it on the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. The song was covered by the company Wavegroup for the game Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol. House music Japanese band Cargo made a cover of the song in their 2007 album “Jewel”. Off The Wall Album: Off the Wall is the fifth studio album by the American pop musician
